Meet Our Teaching Artists

Karen Brown

Karen is a professional visual artist and experienced arts educator. She conducts workshops and residencies for students and educators through organizations including The Kennedy Center, Washington Performing Arts, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Howard University’s African Studies Department, Africa Access, Project Create, Children’s Hospital, and numerous public libraries. Karen is passionate about her work with Inspired Child and deeply believes in their mission to educate through literacy and the arts for every child. 

Karen’s graduate work is in textiles, ceramics, sculpture, 3-D and surface design, bookmaking, and photography. With a background in art and anthropology, Brown is an avid traveler having studied and worked in Poland, Russia, Japan, India and Haiti and traveled to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Eastern and Western Europe, Cuba, Argentina and South Africa. Her deep interest in world cultures inform and enrich her residencies, workshops and public art.  

Karen’s projects often include the use of recycled materials as she is a strong voice for creating a greener, cleaner world for every animal and plant on earth.She specializes in differentiated instruction to meet the needs of children with varied learning modalities and social emotional needs. Karen believes a joyful atmosphere in the classroom leads to deeper and longer lasting understanding.
